Turning climate reporting into climate storytelling
Saturday April 18, 2026 10:30am - 11:30am PDT
How do you report on a crisis as overwhelming as climate change? What does it take to move your audience – to speak not just to the mind, but also the heart? In this session, Los Angeles Times reporter Rosanna Xia will break down her approach to environmental journalism, with lessons learned on how to turn complex issues into memorable stories. Xia will also introduce her latest project, the documentary film Out of Plain Sight, and share insights from her award-winning reporting on toxic pollution.

How Beijing’s trillion-dollar development plan is reshaping the globe - and the natural world
Saturday April 18, 2026 12:00pm - 1:00pm PDT
Since 2013, Chinese companies have poured more than $1 trillion dollars into the country's Belt and Road Initiative, a vast overseas infrastructure effort that has built and financed roads, railways, dams, power plants and more across the globe, outside China's borders. The initiative has projected Chinese influence globally and helped leaders in emerging economies deliver on their promises to build. Yet the initiative has had far-reaching and often underreported impacts on the environment and on climate change, clearing forests, dumping toxic pollution and helping to build out a global fleet of coal plants. In this session, we'll go through how we turned an idea and a question—What are the climate and environmental impacts of China's Belt and Road Initiative?—into a multipart project. We'll cover some of the ways to report on Chinese companies overseas and how we managed various risks when reporting this project, including trying to avoid government surveillance and reporting in regions where the threat of arrest was real.

Investigating Climate Disinformation: Tools to Expose Fossil Fuel Influence on Policy
Saturday April 18, 2026 3:30pm - 4:30pm PDT
How do oil, gas, and coal corporations shape climate narratives to protect their profits? And how does climate disinformation influence government decisions and delay urgent action?

In this hands-on workshop, investigative journalist Liubov Velychko will explain how to trace and expose climate disinformation campaigns funded by major fossil fuel companies, including Shell, ExxonMobil, Saudi Aramco, Gazprom, and Coal India Ltd.

Participants will learn how to map disinformation ecosystems and identify links between fossil fuel companies, influence networks, and policymakers; where to find key data on corporate lobbying, political financing, and PR operations; how to trace financial flows behind disinformation campaigns and identify influential climate disinformation actors; and how to uncover industry-funded research designed to distort climate science.

By the end of the session, participants will have a practical investigative toolkit, access to reliable databases for tracking money and influence, concrete methods for fact-checking corporate narratives, and a clearer understanding of how climate disinformation undermines global climate policy.

A climate journalist's near-death encounter with nature
Saturday April 18, 2026 5:00pm - 6:00pm PDT
A hiking trip in Norway turned into a near-death experience for the award-winning journalist Alec Luhn. For six days he was stranded near Folgefonna, alone and badly injured, before he was rescued.

At SKUP, Luhn will share his best advice on how to uncover and communicate complex stories about the environment and climate. He also offers a personal perspective on the forces of nature and what it feels like to go from reporting the story to becoming it.
